I Left it on Page 32

Sarah Forrest
November 22nd - December 20th 2014

Supplement is pleased to present an exhibition by Sarah Forrest, her second at the gallery. The exhibition is a reconfiguration of a piece commissioned by the CCA in Glasgow in 2013, Forrest has taken this opportunity to readdress the work, presenting an installation of it that responds to its new context.

Forrest's work often weaves together elements of theory, fiction and philosophy most notably in the spoken word narration of her films. The work presented here, I Left it on Page 32, 2013 addresses this relationship by turning directly to Jean Paul Sartre’s Nausea, inserting the novel into the structure of the film. Nausea is written as a series of journal entries detailing a man’s unsettled relationship with reality, as he struggles to maintain his sense of self whilst becoming increasingly detached from the world around him. Sartre uses the fictional protagonist to enact his own philosophy, testing and elaborating it within the framework of fiction.

I left it on Page 32 sees Forrest attempt to get to know Sartre’s protagonist Antoine. His lack of reciprocation leads her to attempt the impossible and insert herself between the pages of the book. This weaving together of multiple layers of fiction brings into consideration the limitations within language, where a speaker is positioned by it; within, alongside, before and after.

The work consists of two 21 minute HD videos installed as projections, there are also objects from the video in the gallery, suggesting a stage set. The two videos are nearly identical but have subtle differences, the viewer is presented with two slightly shifted experiences of the work. This doubling iterates the mirroring of reality in film or writing; building upon the work’s questioning of where reality ends and its representation begins.
